The sperm, prepared, selected and concentrated in the laboratory, are placed directly in the uterine cavity (intrauterine).
IUI is considered if the quality of the sperm is reduced, if the quantity of sperm is too low, if the cervical mucus is abnormal, if there are anti-sperm antibodies or in case of unexplained infertility. IUI can be applied with or without medication to stimulate the ovaries. It will depend on the reason why the treatment should be applied. The IUI is usually preceded by an injection of HCG. Since ovulation takes place approximately 40 hours after the injection of HCG, it is crucial that insemination takes place at the time of ovulation. Your doctor will tell you the best time to give this injection, as well as the time of insemination. Your doctor will tell you if you can also have sex. Time of ovulation Insemination should take place just before ovulation. There are various methods for determining ovulation. It can be done using an ultrasound and blood tests or urine tests (LH or ovulation tests) which you can get in pharmacies. Your doctor will determine with you the most appropriate method. Execution The man provides a sperm sample to the laboratory, where it will be prepared. The doctor slides a small flexible tube through a speculum into the uterus, then slowly deposits the sperm into the uterus. This procedure is generally painless and lasts less than 5 minutes. There is generally no contraindication for having sex soon after insemination. Results The chances of success depend on several factors, including the woman's age and the cause of the fertility problem. The average chance of getting pregnancy is 10% per cycle. Most pregnancies occur during the first 3 treatments. Generally, 3 to 6 treatments are practiced. About 25 to 35% of women are pregnant after 6 treatments. If IUI treatment is unsuccessful, your doctor may decide to combine the IUI with other drugs or switch to other treatments (IVF, ICSI).
